Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Search engine optimisation is basically ensuring that your website is structured in such a way that the search engines such as Google and Yahoo can see the content of your site and understand what it is about.

Search engines read the content of your website and look for keywords and content that match searches their users are making.

Unfortunately, it isn't as simple as 'if it's on your website, the search engines will find it'. If that were the case there would be no need for SEO. Search engines look at a number of elements on your website. They look at things such as the title, the description and your meta tag keywords. They also look at text on the individual pages of the site and other things such as links to and from your website to other websites.

In a perfect world, SEO should be a primary consideration when building your website. Sadly, many web designers are more concerned with the style and other aspects of the functionality of the website and often ignore SEO. Those that do understand the technical aspects of SEO, often don't have the sales and marketing skills to advise the client on the right copy for the website, which should be a compromise between what you want to say about your products and services and what's needed on the page to make your site visible to the search engines. Most web designers will be capable of implementing SEO for your website, but without a sales and marketing background, they will probably not delve deeply into exactly what to optimise for and why.

The difference between effective and poor SEO is not always in the implementation, it's often in understanding your business, your competitors, your market, your products or services and what will produce the right customers for your business.

Unlike pay per click advertising you are not charged when potential clients click through to your website. The downside of search engine optimisation is that it can take a few months before you start noticing the results, as the search engines' 'spiders' take up to 8 weeks for each sweep of the internet. Also, unlike pay per click advertising there is a limit to the number of keywords SEO can realistically promote your site for.

We normally recommend a combination of both techniques; search engine optimisation can be less costly in the long run, but focuses on less keywords, while pay per click advertising produces rapid results and is more controllable.

Once your website has been optimised for the search engines, and submitted to the most suitable directories, it is a case of waiting until the 'spiders' find it. During this time however, your competitors will no doubt be having their own sites optimised. Trying to get their websites higher up the rankings than you.
